You can play without a group, but do not play alone. Press Escape in a match and create or join a squad. It is free, takes seconds, and gives you squadmates on your map and a private voice channel the enemy cannot hear.
There is no published squad size cap. BULKHEAD's February 2026 Top Questions post said squad sizes are unlimited, and no later official post changes that.
No group? Stay near your team, use proximity voice (nearby enemies hear it too), and look for community servers with regulars. Medic income collapses without a crowd, so pick roles that need no partner: spotting with binoculars early, and later a Talon SAM on a supplied FOB, which needs no aiming and no spotter.
